August 22 2009 - Wild Coyote ordered to shut down ID scanning system
<xml>T</xml>he BC Information and Privacy Commissioner recently ordered the Vancouver bar Wild Coyote to stop scanning driver's licenses as a condition of entry, which is important for at least a few reasons. First, it involves an analysis of what personal information is really necessary to provide a service. Second, it requires the Commissioner to struggle with the competing values of privacy and security. Finally, it is worth thinking about the use of ID scanning systems now because their use in private venues will certainly continue to grow.
This edition of PrivacyScan analyzes the Commissioner's decision, and considers some of the broader issues that are at stake.
